Notes

The way that the border between spirals responds to the location of the figures beneath it is evident in this detail. The dynamic three-quarter turned pose of the Roman soldier in this image is one of the more complex found on the Column and reveals a carver working at the peak of their ability, content to experiment with compositions. These figures were meant to have drilled holes in their hands for the insertion of weapons but these never got added.
