Description
The nose of the emperor was restored sometime in the history of the monument. In order to make a more seamless fit the broken edges of the nose were flattened to make a socket.

Description
The incised irises and pupils in this figure's eyes were probably added later. These alterations are usually dated to the Hadrianic period, sometimes to Late Antiquity.

Notes

The break of the nose here shows that it was tidied up and had a replacement pinned on to it at some point. In the background of this image the naturally-occurring veins in the marble can be seen, something which is characteristic of Luna/Carrara statuary-grade marble.
