Evidence for working practices

1. Block joint

Process
Placement
Description
The various block sizes used in the construction of the arch can be clearly seen in this image. The fact that carving crosses them indicates that this work was undertaken in place.

2. Clamp socket

Process
Securing
Description
Metal clamps were originally employed to fix the blocks of this monument in place. On the right the holes made by the removal of metal clamps in the post-Roman period are visible; these cover the whole monument and suggest a campaign of systematic activity, probably in the Medieval period.
