The vestiges of very fine point chiselling are visible around the bottom of the lion's head spout suggesting that this was originally carved as a rough boss with finer work left until the surrounding architectural details had been carved.
Flat chisel marks are visible on the fine band carved along the front of this block which abuts the lion's head spout. To judge from the rough stone immediately around this spout this band was carved before detailed work on the lion's head was begun. Similar drafted lines are visible on the dentils beneath the cornice.
