This carver is using a form of axe with a flat end to square a block of stone.

Notes

This carver is working sitting down, as is also common in workshops in Pakistan and India. in Europe carvers tend to work standing up, though in early Medieval paintings and reliefs carvers are often depicted sitting. The few Roman reliefs that survive of carvers at work show them both sitting and standing.
